It is with great sadness that the family of the
late Samuel (Ack) Ryan of Elliston, N.L., announce his passing on Wednesday,
March 25, 2009, at the age of 79. Predeceased by his parents Herbert and
Bessie, and his wife Lucy. Left to mourn are his two daughters Geraldine
(Gary) and Rowena (Harvey), his two granddaughters Tammy (Ian) and Noelle,
and one great-granddaughter Reese, special friend Mildred and twin sister
Kyla (Merricks), as well as a large circle of family and friends. Ack was
born in Newman’s Cove and had a long and memorable career as a teacher for
35 years. He settled in Elliston in 1954 after marrying the former Lucy
Durdle of Bonavista. He was actively involved in community and church work.
He served on all boards of the United Church, was superintendent of Sunday
School for 12 years, spent 40 years with the Bonavista Branch of the
Canadian Red Cross, 25 years with rural development, 40 years with The
Evening Telegram as a news correspondent and 30 years with VOCM. Sam retired
from teaching in 1984 and the media in 1994. He spent his last years
volunteering with Tourism Elliston. Visitation will take place at Strathie’s
Funeral Home on Friday and Saturday. Funeral service will take place on
Sunday, March 29 at 1 p.m. at Elliston United Church. Flowers gratefully
accepted.
