Wellington ‘Duke’ Shepherdson of Charlotte Street, Sydney, passed away Friday, March 27, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility.
Born in Ontario, he was the son of the late Albert and Rena Shepherdson.
Duke was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas for three and a half years. Wellington worked for Toronto Hydro for over 30 years. He loved singing, gardening and watching sports. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Duke will be remembered for his great sense of humour and compassionate nature.
He is survived by his wife the former Elizabeth O’Day; stepchildren, Sharon, Wayne, Richard, Gary, Ronnie, Larry, step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his siblings.
Wellington was predeceased by a stepchild, Stanley, one brother, Lloyd and three sisters, Mildred, Mary and Clarissa.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A memorial service will be held in Ontario at a later date.
As an expression of sympathy for Wellington, donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
