DOROTHY PORTER of Moose Jaw passed away at the Union Hospital on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. Born to Alice and Robert Hardwick June 6, 1913 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she was the second of six children. Dorothy lived on a farm near Jansen, Saskatchewan until she was sixteen years old when the family moved to Regina. She finished high school at Scot Collegiate and then went to teachers college. Mom taught at many country schools in southern, Saskatchewan. The first school being Anchor, east of Willow Bunch where she met and married Leonard Porter in 1937. They farmed for a while then she went back teaching until her retirement in 1974, the last school being Hodgeville where she had taught for eight years. Mom and Dad lived in Kaslo, B.C. until Dad passed away in 1985. Mom moved to Duncan, B.C. to be closer to her siblings and son. In 1994 she moved to Moose Jaw and in 2000 to Chateau St. Michael care home and in 2006 moved to Providence Place. Mom was a member of the United Church and The Memorial Society Association. After her retirement mom enjoyed making quilts and afghans until her eyesight failed. Predeceased by three brothers, one sister and one granddaughter, Dorothy is survived by one son, Robert Porter – Langley, B.C., one daughter, Ellen (Johnny) Maruska – Moose Jaw, one sister Phoebe – Victoria, B.C.; six grandchildren: Sheila Maruska – Moose Jaw, Laurie (Mike) Thibert – Edmonton, Debra (Rick) Windsor – Swan River, Manitoba, Janice (Miles) Petersen – Mortlach, Darren (Michelle) Maruska – Moose Jaw, Kirk (Jody) Maruska – Moose Jaw; thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters. Following cremation, A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 2p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church Chapel, 60 Athabasca St. E., Moose Jaw. Reverend Earla McKinnell will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. In living memory of Dorothy, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.
