It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Burns, 95, a resident of the MacGillivray Guest Home, formerly of Tometary Drive, Howie Centre, who passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2009, after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer’s Disease, surrounded by family members.
Born in Kennetcook, Hants Co. on August 27, 1913, he was the son of the late Harry and Muriel (Ettinger) Burns.
John was the owner and president of John Burns Ltd., retiring in 1977. He was an elder of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River and a member of the Kiwanis Golden K, Independent Order of Forresters and the Fraternal Benefit Society. His greatest accomplishment was his family and he took the utmost satisfaction and enjoyment in seeing his family thriving and happy. John was the type of man who wouldn’t see anyone in hardship due to financial need and was a strong community worker.
Surviving are his loving wife, Pearl (McKenzie); children, Eleanor, Ridgetown, Ruth, Calgary, Ruby, Sydney, Doug, Howie Center, Claudia, Hantsport, David, Sydney, Gloria, Sarnia, Cathy, Pictou, Bobby, Calgary, Jimmy, Airdrie, Carole Anne, Pt. Edward, Roger, Sydney River, Paula, Sheet Harbour and Tim, Perth; sisters, Cassie, Burlington, Ont., Margie, Oshawa, Ont.; brothers, Hedley, Truro, Bill, Kennetcook, Ron, Howie Centre; 40 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
John was predeceased by his son, Johnnie (1971); four brothers; one sister and four grandchildren in infancy.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the United Protestant Church of Sydney River on Saturday 2 p.m., with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made the MacGillivray Guest Home or the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
