It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Joan Edith MacNeil of Iona on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck, surrounded by her loving family, one day before her 87th birthday.
Born in Toronto, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeh Rickett. In her early years, she was employed with Canada Carbon, Toronto.
Joan was a member of St. Columba Church, Iona, Clan MacNeil and the Nova Scotia Highland Village. She was a well known craftsperson and former producer for Island Crafts of Sydney. It gave mom a great deal of pleasure and pride to know that some of her crafts were on display at Buckingham Palace.

Joan is also survived by her loyal companion, her dog Humphrey, whom she loved dearly.
Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her sister, Lucy.
Visitation will be held Saturday, April 4, 2009, in St. Columba Church, Iona, from 12 noon until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m., Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial in St. Columba Cemetery. Reception to follow at Branch 124 Legion, Iona.
Family flowers only. Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to St. Columba Cemetery Fund.
“Sleep peacefully, Mom.
We love you.”
