It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, Evelyn, on April 1, 2009 at the QEII Hospital in Halifax, N.S.
Born June 8, 1940, in New Waterford, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Duncan and Nelina (MacMillin) Gillis. Evelyn was a former member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. A natural caregiver, Evelyn was retired from her position as a P.C.W. from Northwood Manor in Halifax, N.S.
Left to mourn are her children, Bonita, Ottawa, Ont., Kathey (Manning) Lee and Kelley (Bernie) Burke; both of New Waterford and Kevin, Elnora, Alta. She will be sadly missed by her beloved grandchildren, Tamara Connors, Pamela Gillis, and Morgan Reid, Lindsy, Emily and Nicholas Burke, Shannon and Molly Lee; her cherished great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Kiarra and Keigan Connors. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Raymond Oliver, New Waterford and sisters, Danina (Brian) Bates, New Waterford and Agnes ‘Toogie’ Cooke, Glace Bay. Evelyn will be remembered fondly by her dearest friends, Ruby, Greg and Claudia of Halifax.
Evelyn was predeceased by her eldest daughter Karen (Michael) Reid, brothers Duncan ‘Gussie’, Allan ‘Allie’, Stanley, Keith and Brian and sister Margaret-Ann Bickerton.
Visitation will be held Sunday, April 5, from 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Evelyn will take place Monday, April 6, 2009, at 10 a.m. in The Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church with Father Doug MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow with interment in St Agnes Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be held at St. Agnes Hall immediately following the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
