It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Ronald Gerard MacArthur, of Sydney, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on April 2, 2009.
Born in Glace Bay, Dad was the son of the late Judge Neil R. and Anne E. MacArthur, Sydney.
Dad was an educator for over 40 years. In the early years, he taught at Riverview Rural High School. Dad and his partner, Edward Currie, founded and operated the Cape Breton Business College.
Dad is survived by his wife (our mother), Sally (MacDonald); children, Mary Elaine (John) Muise, Sydney; Alan (Debbie), Alberta; Brian (Leslie), Sydney; Cathy (Robert) Bobbett, Arizona and Peggy at home.
He was predeceased by an infant son, Neil.
Dad was cherish by his nine grandchildren, Katie and Janine Muise; Sarah and Adam MacArthur; Moira and Meghan MacArthur; and Jill, Jocelyn, and Bradley Bobbett.
Also surviving are three sisters, Sr. Genevive MacArthur (CSM), Antigonish; Sr. Helen MacArthur (CSM), Antigonish and Leone MacArthur, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Genevive MacArthur and Evelyn MacArthur; brother-in-law, Bernard Steele and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and infant son, Dad was predeceased by his siblings and their spouses, Mary MacLeod (Neil); Jimmy (Norma); Leo; Gerald; Donald (Helen); Rod; Rita Gillis (Hugh) and Theresa Steele.
At Dad’s request, his body has been donated to Dalhousie University for medical research. There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Sydney, with Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Friends are invited to the Joan Harris Cruise Pavilion, Esplanade, immediately following the mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, P.O. Box 561, Sydney, Nova Scotia, B1P 6H4, or the ALS Society of Nova Scotia, 3433 Dutch Village Rd., Unit #3, Halifax, Nova Scotia B3N 2S7.
