Bill (William) Mccormick
Passed on: September 11th, 2008
May 28, 1928 – September 11, 2008. Bill McCormick, son of Evelyn (McCormick) Morris, William McCormick and stepson to George Morris, passed away suddenly while visiting his hometown of Springhill, Nova Scotia. As a young man, Bill was a hardworking and dedicated miner in the local coalmine. He was also proud of his title, “light heavy weight champion,” while serving in the Navy. In the early fifties he met and married local girl Janice Fraser and together they moved West to start their new life. As their family expanded the couple and two children eventually settled in Kimberly, B.C. There, Bill began his career with the Sullivan mine and quickly became involved in the community. He continued boxing, played baseball and participated in other recreational sports. As the years passed his sense of community only grew as he became a member if the local Legion and Kimberly Elks Hall. He believed in giving to others, helping with many fundraisers involving children’s charities. HE also supported the Kimberly food bank by combining his own elaborate Christmas light up with an annual food drive. Bill loved large gatherings, entertaining and spending time with family and friends. He had a cabin on Kootenay Lake and enjoyed walking, fishing and hunting. He spent much of his time with his four grandchildren, as they were truly his pride and joy. In later years his passions were golfing, bowling and visiting his three great grandchildren, with whom he lobed singing and dancing with every day. He always let it be known that he felt like the luckiest man in the world. Bill loved to make everyone smile and truly seemed a child at heart. Although Bill created a wonderful life in Kimberly, Springhill never left his heart. He loved going ”back home” as often as he could and was very proud to be a “Junction Roader.” Bell was a faithful friend and will be remembered as a man of great kindness and generosity to all who knew him. He leaves behind many happy memories and cherished stories. He held his friends and family close in heart, and truly cared about everyone he knew. Times spent together him will be treasured always. Survived by mother Evelyn Morris; aunts Mildred Berry, June Jewkes, Jackie (Ralph) Maine; sisters Eleanor (Hedley) Sutherland, Isabel Cruickshank, Doloris (Ron) McKay; brother Gary (Marg) McCormick; son Vernon (Debbie); daughter Susie (Tony) Bennett; grandchildren Robyn (Richard) Hilton, Stacy McCormick, Kim and Keith Bennett; great grandchildren Kylie, Logan and Lace; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and good friends.
