Dorchester, N.B. - Garfield Spence, 84, of Dorchester, passed away at his residence on Friday, September 5, 2008, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Shemogue, he was the son of the late Coleman and Maude (Payne) Spence. Garfield was a retired merchant, having operated a store in Dorchester for over 35 years, as well as a “gentleman” farmer. He served his community as fire chief, member of Dorchester village council, member of the Southeast Economic Commission and was a charter member of the first Dorchester Lions Club. He was a Veteran of World War II, having served with the Royal Canadian Air Force for over four years. He loved gardening, hunting and fishing, and spending time at his camp in Canaan. Garfield will be sadly missed by his children, Peter (Susan), Dorchester, Penny (David) Green, Jersey Cove, N.S., Pam (George) Cusack, Moncton, Pauline (Ron-deceased) MacGregor, Dorchester, Paul (Audrey), Dorchester, Maude (Ian) MacKenzie, Dieppe, and Coleman (Sharon), CFB Greenwood, N.S.; and by grandchildren Cathryn, Nicholas, Victoria, Elizabeth, Angela, Dale, Dawn, Kerri, Michael, David, Stephanie, Zoe, Zachary, Abigail, Hunter and great-grandson Brandon. Also missed by sisters Dorothy Stiles and Eileen Maxwell; sister-in-law Bella Spence and brother in-law Gordon Close. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife Clematis (Cooke); infant son Murray Coleman; second wife Elizabeth (Harris); son Herbert; sister Rita; and brothers Albert and Clarence. Arrangements were entrusted to the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville, NB (506-364-1300) where visiting hours were held on Monday, September 8, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 2 p.m. from Trinity Anglican Church, Dorchester, Rev. Father Kevin Stockall officiating. Burial in the Dorchester Rural Cemetery. A reception followed in the Trinity Church hall.
