Sackville, N.B. - The death of William “Willie” Hastie, 87, of Sackville, occurred suddenly at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, February, 27, 2008. Born in Scotland, he was the son of the late William and Elizabeth (Turner) Hastie. Willie was a prominent contractor who celebrated 40 successful years in construction on his 70th birthday. For 35 years he had been an active member of the Sackville Lions Club. Among the many awards he received, the most notable were the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and a Life Membership Award. His plaques are displayed proudly at the Sackville Lions Den. He loved hunting, snowmobiling and woodworking. He loved playing the “mouth-organ” and was never without it. A man of strong values, Willie was very family oriented and very much a Scotsman through and through. Willie will be sadly missed by his wife of 60 years, Doris (nee Phinney); one son, Peter (Cindy Amos) of Sackville; two daughters, Lois (Laverne) MacDonald, of Paris, ON, and Angela (Timmy Hicks) Hastie of Sackville; one brother, Alex; five sisters, Margaret, Helen, Betty, Ella, and Agnes; five grandchildren, Melissa, Bridget, Jason, Nicholas, Kelsey; and five great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Johnny. The remains were entrusted to the care of the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge Street, Sackville (364-1300). The funeral service was held Saturday, March 1, 2008, at 2 p.m. from the funeral home, Pastor Hal Lowther officiating. Visitation was held on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from 1-2 p.m. until the time of the funeral. A Lions Memorial Service was held Friday, Feb. 29 at 6:30 p.m. before visitation.
