Adrienne Smith
Passed on: October 16th, 2008
It is with great sadness that we, the family of Adrienne Smith announce her peaceful passing after a lengthy battle with cancer on Thursday, October 16th, 2008 at home, with her loving husband of 36 years, Ira by her side. Born and raised in Amherst, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Emily (O'Neill) Gillis. She attended the Amherst Regional High School and later the Saint Charles Business School where she graduated with honors. Her work career started at the Information Centre in Fort Lawrence and then later on to Amherst Insurance until accepting a secretarial position with the federal government until her daughter was born in 1980. As her children grew she accepted a position with the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission until she became sick in 2007. There was no greater joy in Adrienne's life than to see other people happy and she particularly enjoyed having everyone out to her cottage for get togethers. In her younger years she and Ira would travel on their motorcycles visiting friends and family as far away as Vermont and Boston. Adrienne also enjoyed dancing especially to the older music. She liked the slower pace of days gone by and had little use for modern gadgets. She is survived by her husband Ira, daughter Janie of Amherst, son Matthew of Fredericton, N.B., brother Dan of Truro, sister in law Linda of Amherst as well as her father and mother in law Fred and Neita Smith as well as several special nieces, nephews, and many special friends. Adrienne was predeceased by her parents in the early '70s and by her brother Jimmy in 1996. She will be sadly missed for her poise and strength. She was a quiet strong individual who met every challenge with a simple solution. Adrienne gave of herself freely and will always be remembered in our hearts for the loving caring woman she was. In honor of Adrienne's wishes cremation has taken place under the direction of Campbell's Funeral Home, Amherst (667-9906) There was no visitation prior to the funeral service held on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Amherst, with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. A celebration of life will also take place on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 9 Palmer Street, Amherst at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Adrienne's memory may be made to the Canadian Red Cross, Cumberland Regional Health Care, Palliative Care Unit or the VON. www.campbells-amherst.ca
