Fred Smith

The death of Fred Smith, age 75, of Southampton, occurred at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008. Born in Athol, he was a son of the late Lorne and Mildred (Canning) Smith. A radar technician, he served with the Canadian Air Force for 5 years. Following his military career, he worked on the Distant Early Warning (DEW Line) for over 40 years, as Site Manager serving in various locations in the Canadian Arctic. After retirement, he lived in Southampton volunteering on the Cumberland County Health Board, was a member of the Southampton United Church and sang with the "Travellers". Fred frequently volunteered his time and vehicle driving those in need of transportation to medical care, often travelling as far away as Halifax and Moncton. Fred will be long remembered and sadly missed by a daughter, Kimberley, Lubbock, Texas; 2 sons, Darrell (Heather), Winnipeg, MB and Lorne (Pamela), Hammonds Plains, NS; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Adams, Southampton, Evelyn (Ken) MacKay, Eramosa, ON, Karen (David) Dickinson, Westbrook, NS; 6 brothers, Earle (Barb), Grand Prairie, AB, Johnson (Shirley), Salisbury, NB, Lorne C., Parrsboro, NS, Richard (Bev), Kitscoty, AB, Eric (Lucille), Sweaburg, ON, and Leslie (Joy), Granville Ferry, NS. He was predeceased by his wife Jessie (Rector) in 2004. Fred's remains have been cremated under the direction of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (902-667-8777). A memorial service will be held in Southampton in the summer of 2009. Burial in the Southampton Cemetery.
