
Lyda Barteaux

Lyda M. Barteaux, 92, of Fox River, Cumberland County passed away Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at All Saints Hospital, Springhill with loved ones by her side. Born in Parrsboro, she was a daughter of the late Nelson and Lavenia (Tibbetts) Pettis. Lyda attended Port Greville School, later enrolling in Provincial Normal College, Truro where she obtained her teachers license in 1938. She taught in many schools throughout Nova Scotia, namely Port Greville, Fox River, Cannonville, River Hebert, Parrsboro and Shannon Park (Dartmouth), retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Lyda was the longest serving member of the Port Greville Baptist Church, where she was a choir member and held the office of Treasurer of the Ladies Aid Group. She volunteered at the Age of Sail Museum in Ward's Brook. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, where she served as Past Grand, Maritime Domain. She is survived by a son, George (Faye), New Salem; three grandchildren, Graham, Edmonton; Glenn (Sue), Port Greville; Leigh (Buffy), Port Greville; three great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Gwen Pettis, Upper Musquodoboit; seven nieces and two nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Howard Wheaton; second husband, Fred Barteaux; brothers, Vincent, Stanley, Roland, Weston; nieces, Donna and Sherry Pettis. Visitation took place 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 at Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Funeral service was held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Port Greville Baptist Church, Rev. Don Hirtle officiating. Burial was in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Fox River. Memorial donations may be made to the Port Greville Baptist Church, the Chignecto Manor or to a charity of choice.
