Marjorie Frances Costin (Redmond)

Passed on: October 20th, 2008

It is with great sadness that we wish to announce Marjorie's passing, on Monday, October 20, 2008, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Her unrelenting struggles and refusals to give up were great sources of strength and wisdom to those of us who helped and cared for Marjorie. The word "braveheart" springs to mind. Music, friends and family were Marjorie's life focus. She received her early training from the nuns at the convent schools in St. John's, Nfld, and received Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education degrees from Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick. Marjorie pursued graduate studies on the violin at the Robert Schumann Institute, Düsseldorf, Germany and was an accredited Suzuki violin instructor. She was a founding member of the Calos Youth Orchestra, the precursor of the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra, and performed with the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, Newfoundland Sinfonia, The New Brunswick Symphony, New Brunswick String Quartet, and Symphony Nova Scotia. She was a regular performer on C.B.C. Radio and TV. Marjorie loved teaching the violin. She realized it as an opportunity to give back to others. She taught classroom music for the Cumberland County School Board, was a music specialist with the Roman Catholic School Board for St. John's Nfld, teaching the string program at Holy Heart of Mary High School and the instrumental band and choral music program at Mary Queen of Peace School.  Marjorie was a string instructor with the Suzuki Talent Education Program (STEP) and was always teaching a number of private violin students. As a testament to her teaching skills, her students live throughout the world and many of them are now doing what she loved to do, giving back to others. Marjorie was an avid gardener, taking great pride in her rose gardens. They were the areas of great pleasures for walks with her friends and dog. She was fascinated with angels and felt their presence in her home and gardens. For more on what roses meant to Marjorie go to www.furlongjones.ca Marjorie would enjoy her Wednesday's teas and the pleasant companionship of her friends. Their motto was to be happy with what you had, no point complaining, learn to laugh, and to understand that there are some things in life that you simply cannot change. Dance and laugh, but not because of someone else's misfortune. Marjorie loved to travel and always looked forward to the next trip. Whether it was to Newport, Rhode Island, to the gentle breezes of Varadero Cuba, to watch a tennis tournament at Dartmouth College, or to have a meal in Antigonish, it was done with great pleasure.  Tennis was her passion and Marjorie really enjoyed traveling to tournaments to watch Andrew and Jillian play. Once Marjorie was touched by cancer she became actively involved in helping others afflicted by this terrible disease. She was a member of local and provincial cancer boards,  a member of the national support group "Cancer Connections", and gave her time speaking at fundraisers and community groups. All those who knew Marjorie and were touched by her will sadly miss her presence and companionship. Marjorie is survived by her husband and soul mate of 32 years, William; son, Andrew; daughter, Jillian; mother, Marjorie, St.John's, NL; brothers, Kevin  (Sophia), St. John's, NL; Edwin  (Jenny), St. John's, NL; sisters, Lynn (Ray), Toronto, Ontario; Patricia (Robert) Montana, USA; Doreen (Ron), Doha, Qatar; several nephews and nieces, and of course, Golda and Jinx.  She was predeceased by her father, Michael and a brother Michael. Special thanks to all of the kind nurses and doctors at the palliative care unit at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Nappan, N.S. and the oncology clinic at the Dr. George Dumont Hospital, Moncton, N.B. for such great care and support throughout the last years for Marjorie's illness.  A special group hug to Marjorie's friends who were truly angels in their never ending support of Marjorie and her family during these last difficult and trying months. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. A celebration of Marjorie's life will be held at Christ Church, Amherst, Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 11 a.m.,  Archdeacon Glenn Eason, officiating. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a favorite charity would be appreciated.  www.furlongjones.ca Dona nobis pacem
