It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney on November 22, 1923, he was the son of the late Edward and Gertie (Hawco) Davis.
‘Dud’ was employed for 42 years at the Sydney Steel Corp. retiring in 1982. He worked tirelessly for organizations in Whitney Pier throughout his life. He was a founding member of the Whitney Pier Rink and the original commanding officer of Whitney Pier Air Cadet Squadron 587. He was an active member of Branch 128 Whitney Pier Legion, serving in many executive positions including President. Dud served for many years on the executive of Whitney Pier Minor Hockey.
He was very proud to have served his country overseas during the Second World War, in Italy and Holland, continuing to attend reunions of the Royal Canadian Engineers (SAPPERS) until his illness.
Dud will always be remembered for his unending generosity and kindness towards his family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 68 years, the former Stella Zahara; children Jeanette Spriggs; Betty (Allan) Chiasson; Valerie (Pierre) DeRepentigny; Edward (Debbie); Debbie Davis and Donald (Donna). He will be greatly missed by his loving grandchildren Christa, Courtney, Emily, Jessica, Ally, Daniel, Connor, Kyle, Timmy, Donald, Chad, Genevieve and Chantal and great grandchildren Mikayla, Mitchel, Tyler, Connor and Kirk. Dud is also survived by brothers William, Kevin and Cyril, sisters Sharon and Rita.
He was predeceased by his son, E. Michael; grandson, Kelly; sons-in-law, James Spriggs and Leonard Chiasson and brothers, Melvin and Gerald.
Dud will be greatly missed but will always live on in the hearts of his wife, children and grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
