Passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Margaret (MacLennan) Stewart. She was educated in Sydney Mines and graduated from the Provincial Normal College, Truro in 1936. She taught school from 1936 until her retirement in 1976, first at Baddeck Forks and later at Baddeck Consolidated School.
She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Baddeck Forks, where she was organist and choir director for more than 50 years, as well as an active member of the UCW. For many years Joie directed the Baddeck and area men’s choir. She was a one time leader of 4-H, member of the Alumni Association of Nova Scotia Teachers’ College, board member of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital and the board of Alderwood Rest Home. In her early married years, she was assistant post mistress at Baddeck Forks.
She is survived by sons, Charles, Big Baddeck and Stewart (Bonnie), Antigonish; daughters, Margaret (Stanley) Gooding, Sydney Mines, Sally (Winston) Cameron and Judi (Bernie) MacDonald, both of Baddeck; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margaret MacPhee and special friend, Evie Brenton.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Borden; brothers, Sidney and Wesley Stewart and daughter-in-law, Helen.
There will be visitation on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Funeral will be Thursday, April 9, 2009 at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s United Church, Baddeck Forks, under the direction of Rev. Karen Lynch, with burial at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Victoria County Memorial Hospital Charitable Foundation, Alderwood Rest Home or Baddeck Valley Community Club.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Drs. Chow and Genge and the entire staff of the Victoria County Memorial Hospital, staff of Alderwood Rest Home and the many caregivers who looked after Joie’s needs for the past several years.
