Scotchtown/Sydney
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Helene Martha Mossop, 91, of the Cove Guest Home, Sydney and formerly of Queen Street, Scotchtown on April 12, 2009 at the Cove Guest Home.
Born in New Waterford, she is a daughter of the late Josef and Emma Maria (Rama) Schrage.
Helene was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. She was a seamstress who taught sewing in Scotchtown and St. Agnes School where she was, at one time, head of the Craft Guild. Helene was considered to be an avid gardener and weaver who also loved to dance. She also enjoyed her camping trips to Kilkenny Lake during Miner's vacation.
In earlier years, Helene was noted as one of the first women of that time to operate a highway truck. This truck was in fact her dad's and was a moment in her life that made her extremely proud. She was also in training to become a Registered Nurse when unfortunately she had to leave due to contracting Tuberculosis.
Helene was known as a loving and caring woman who was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Surviving are daughters Elaine (David) Hulford, Cole Harbour, Shirley Scattolon, Helene's caregiver for the last several years, New Waterford; son Ronald Mossop, Alberta; grandchildren Raylene Scattolon, Ricardo Scattolon, Lynn Roger, Ian Hulford, Derek Mossop; three great-grandsons, Dalton Mossop, Corbin Mossop, Dylan Scattolon; two step-granddaughters, Tracy and Rhonda. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and one special nephew, Douglas Shrage. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, Helene was predeceased by her husband Clement; brothers Gustove 'Gus', Josef in childhood, William and Bernhard in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 16 at 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. A luncheon will take place after the burial at Calvin Hall in New Waterford. Family flowers only.
