Dr. James A. Miller

Passed on: September 10th, 2008

Passed peacefully away in the presence of his loving family at the Leonard A. Miller Centre on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at the age of 71. Predeceased by his parents Leonard J. and Mary M. of Placentia, and son-in-law Christopher Sullivan. Jim acquired his Doctorate in Dental Surgery (Dalhousie University) and specialty training in Oral Surgery (University of Pennsylvania). He earned his Fellowship with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Oral Surgery and was most proud of later becoming a Diplomate with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists at the age of 63. He was both the first dentist of Placentia and, later, oral and maxillofacial surgeon of Newfoundland and Labrador. He often struggled on behalf of patients and, during a forty six year career, raised many critical issues with health policy makers, and frequently gave his service and experience pro bono publico. Leaving to celebrate his active life, his cherished wife of thirty nine years, Carol A. (nee Diamond); his daughter Melissa Sullivan and his son Robert (Angela Harvey). Leaving to mourn his sisters Bernice Swallow (John) of Vernon, British Columbia and Sheila Flynn (Patrick) of Placentia. He will be dearly remembered by his beloved Aunts Bernadine Murphy of Placentia and Rose (Dr. Bill Stucker) of Indiana, and never to be forgotten by his sisters-in-law Heather Richardson (Charles) of Phoenix, Arizona and Marina Wight of Victoria, British Columbia; and his brother-in-law Winston Diamond. Sadly missed by his canine buddies, Darwin and Tuxedo. Heartfelt thanks to Fr. John Courage, Dr. P. Skirving, Dr. W. Eaton and Dr. S. Rorke; the kind nursing staffs of the Dr. Leonard A. Miller Centre, Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, Community Health, and Tender Loving Care. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation on Thursday and Friday from 2:00-4:00 p.m and 7:00-9:00 p.m. service on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Carnell's Chapel. Private interment to follow at a later date. Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations to Jim's favorite charity, Daffodil Place c/o the Canadian Cancer Society, would be most appreciated (www.daffodilplace.ca/give/donation.asp).
