Matilda Lewis, 96, Sydney, formerly of Westmount – The family of Matilda (Tillie) Lewis are deeply saddened to announce her death at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Home on April 13, 2009.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (MacNeil) MacGillivray. She was a member of Holy Rosary Parish, Westmount, and in years following St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney. She reached out to her community in many caring ways both public and private, and served as President of the CWL for multiple terms, and President of Westmount Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was a long time employee of Wright’s Furniture Store in Sydney.
She will be deeply missed by her daughters, Marion Lewis (Sydney) Mona (Bill) Darnbrough (Dartmouth) and her son David (Annette) Lewis (Enfield), loving sisters Jane (Binns) Coady, Elsie Kaarto, both of Sydney. Precious to her grandchildren, Nanny was a devoted grandmother to Matthew Lewis, Margaret (Tyler) Mattheis, Andrea Darnbrough (Louie Ghiz), Fiona Lewis, Ashley Lewis, Christopher Darnbrough, Joshua Lewis, and Laura Darnbrough. She delighted in the birth of her great-grandchildren, Cienna Matilda Lewis and Lincoln “Danny Boy” Mattheis. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Rebecca Lewis and Betty Lewis, special niece Edith Lewis, special nephew Larry Kaarto, and many other nieces and nephews.
Tillie was predeceased by her husband, Hubert Lewis, sister Lucy MacCarthy, brothers Roddie and Neil MacGillivray, and Joseph Agnew. Visitation Friday 17th 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Chant’s Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral mass Saturday 18th 11 am, at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount. Interment to follow at the parish cemetery.
