It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Deebie Smuck, on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a courageous battle with lung cancer, Deebie passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney, on June 25, 1953, she was the eldest daughter of Connie Rahey, Sydney, and Carl Rahey, Toronto.
After graduating from Holy Angels High School, Deebie resided in Sydney and later Mississauga for many years. She was a cherished employee and colleague with Shoppers Drug Mart until the time of her illness. She then returned home to Sydney to be with her caring family.
Deebie’s jovial nature, positive attitude and generous spirit made her a special and memorable person to all that she met. Her young granddaughter, Valerie, recently wrote a beautiful tribute where she talked about her Baba’s laugh and happy nature which she enjoyed so much.
In addition to her loving parents, Deebie will be sadly missed by her husband, Barry, Mississauga; son, Calvin (Joanna) Hann, Sydney; cherished grandchildren, C.J. and Valerie, and sisters, Catherine ‘Cathy’ Rahey (Pierre Yves Barbier), Halifax, Carol (Basil) MacAskill, Sydney, Carla and Candace Rahey, Toronto. She is also survived by her stepmother, Linda Rahey, Toronto, stepdaughter, Terri Smuck, Sudbury; grandson, Logan; nephews, Christopher and Nicholas Abbass; special family member, Helen Ginter and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Deebie is now with her loving grandparents, Katie and Jim Vasilakis and Deebie and Richard Rahey, who predeceased her.
Visitation will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Sunday April 19, 2009 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel, with Fr. Donald MacGillivary officiating.
Reception to follow. Interment to follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care, An Cala or charity of choice.
