88, (November 21, 1920) of Stanley Bridge, P.E.I, formerly of Montréal, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at the Dartmouth General Hospital in Nova Scotia, with his family by his side, following a courageous battle with cancer. He will be sadly missed by his friends and family; his loving wife, Joyce (nee Worthy), of 66 years; sons, Cliff (Helga), Brian, and daughter Shirley (Neill).
Granddaughter Sabina arrived with her children Evan, Nicholas and Alexander from Victoria, B.C.; and grandson, Steve with little son Liam, from Fort Myers, Florida. Other immediate family members included Carl from Vancouver, and Karin from Fort Myers who sent their loving thoughts. Walter was predeceased by his brother Gerald, and is also lovingly remembered by his sister, Judy, and cousins, Pearl and Diana.
Prior to conscription in 1939, Walter sailed from Halifax with the Royal Montréal Regiment to serve overseas returning at war's end to Montreal in 1945. He was later joined by his war bride, Joyce, and infant son, Cliff, who arrived on the Queen Mary via Pier 21 on Father's Day 1946.
Walter was employed for 34 years with the English Montréal School Board. He was also a past president of the Montréal Chapter of Civitan International.
Our dad was a devoted, husband and loving father. Mention of his name brings smiles of remembrance. He adored his children, grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. Children were always drawn to their Opa by his gentle humour and engaging way he played with them.
We know that a good, kind person like Dad will never go anywhere but to Heaven and God will look after him for ever.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, Christ Church at 50 Wentworth Street, Dartmouth, N.S., at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at the church hall.
It was Walter's wish that in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his memory to the Schizophrenia Society of N.S.
