On April 21, 2009, Theresa passed away peacefully in Dartmouth, N.S., surrounded by the love and support of her children.
Theresa was born and lived most of her life in Glace Bay, N.S.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Gillis. Following her husband’s death Theresa moved to Dartmouth to be closer to her children.
She was a devoted mother.
Theresa is survived and cherished by her children, Lynn Francis, Lorain Nightingale and her husband Richard Smerdon, Glen and his wife, Janel, Diane O’Reilly and her husband George, and Brian and his partner Marlene. Theresa is an adored Nana to Katelyn and Beth O’Reilly, Emily Francis, Stephen and Ryan Gillis, and Marlene’s son Weston. She was a beloved grand-nanny to the sparkle in her eye, Kyla Marie.
At Theresa’s request, cremation has taken place. A mass to honour Theresa’s life will take place at St. Anne’s Church, 108 Main St., Glace Bay, Monday, April 27 at 10 a.m., reception to follow in the church foyer. Interment will take place at a later date in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the VON would be appreciated.
The family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to Theresa’s oncologist Dr. Younis, her longtime physician Dr. Fraser, the staff of the VON, Sue and Ruby of Palliative Care, and Trish Keeping for their support and care.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home in Glace Bay.
