The Honourable Dr. Orville Howard Phillips, DDS. Peacefully at Ottawa, Ont., on April 24, 2009, in his 86th year and with his family at his side. Born in O’Leary, P.E.I., the son of the late J.S. and Maude (MacArthur) Phillips. Orville joined the RCAF during the Second World War and served with the 426 Thunderbird Squadron. Upon his return he married Marguerite (nee Woodside) in 1945. Orville graduated from Prince of Wales College and then Dalhousie University in 1952 with his dental degree. He won the prize for children’s dentistry at his graduation. He practised dentistry in Alberton, P.E.I., Summerside, P.E.I., and Ottawa, Ont. Orville was first elected to the House of Commons in 1957 and was re-elected in 1958 and 1962 and served until 1963. In 1963, he was called to The Senate of Canada where he served until retirement in 1999. Loving father of Brian (Bonnie) of Calgary, Alta., Betty Phillips-Simpson (John) of Grande Prairie, Alta., Robert (Wendy) of Oakville, Ont., Patricia Ryan (Gerald) of Ottawa, Ont. Loving grandfather to Michael and David Phillips, Andrew, Stewart and Derek Simpson, Christian and Sarah Phillips, Nicholas and Sean Ryan. Brother to Ray (Gertrude) Phillips of Sussex, N.B. His dearly beloved wife, Marguerite, predeceased him in 2004. He was also predeceased by brothers, Vernon, Ernest, Wyman, Brenton, Erland and Sanford and sisters, Lillian, Ivy and Flora. Survived by sisters-in-law, Pansy Phillips, Thelma Phillips, Doris Phillips, Anne Phillips and Marian Darrach. Friends are invited to visit at Ferguson’s Funeral Home and Chapel, O’Leary, on Thursday April 30, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. The Funeral Service will be held at the O’Leary United Church, Friday May 1 at 11 a.m. Interment in Knutsford Cemetery, O’Leary, P.E.I. Memorial contributions to the Knutsford Cemetery Fund, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Lung Association.
