Marie Bernedette (MacDonald) Black, 88, of Kings Road, Sydney, passed away Monday, April 27, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her family by her side.
Born in Port Morien, she was the daughter of the late John Joseph MacDonald and Kate Ann MacDonald Goodwin.
She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Sydney, Units 5 and 6 U.C.W., a former Explore Youth leader and vacation Bible school teacher.
Mom had a passion for knitting, crocheting and quilting which she shared with others. She was a homemaker at heart and enjoyed providing a warm, happy home for her husband, daughter, relatives and friends.
Mom was an equal partner with dad, working together they built a home, a bungalow and enjoyed summer days camping, traveling and sunsets on the Bras d’Or Lakes. She was a person of strong religious faith, church and family were the center of her life. Her personal belief for life was to treat each individual equally, with respect and dignity. What you do for one, you do for all.
Prior to her marriage, Mom worked at the Glory Café and Myer’s Photographic Studio, Glace Bay.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Sharon Anne Black; brother, John (Eleanor) MacDonald, Glace Bay; nephews, Keith (Leona) MacDonald, Bruce (Jo-Ann) MacDonald; grandnephews, Kevin, Brendan, Devin, Andrew, Ethan MacDonald; grandniece, Penney MacDonald, all of Sydney.
Besides her parents, Marie was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, George ‘Blackie’, May 12, 2008; her brother, John Allan MacDonald; in-laws, Edwin and Emma Black; sister-in-law, Frances Black and stepfather, Jack Goodwin.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 1, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, at St. Andrew’s United Church, Bentinck Street, with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Interment in St. Luke’s United Church Cemetery, Donkin. Following the service a reception will take place in St. Andrew’s Memorial Hall.
Memorial donations can be made to St. Andrew’s United Church, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation or charity of one’s choice.
