Surrounded by his loving family, Blaise William Campbell, 86, of Taigh Na Mara, passed away May 2, 2009. The son of the late Russell and Susan (White), Blaise was born and raised in Victoria Mines.
As so many in the area Blaise was a retired coal miner. At 18 he was a commissioned officer in the air force, after the war he started in #12 colliery and moved from miner to underground manager fairly quickly. From there he moved on to Lingan, where he started as development manager then move up to production manager and finally manager, until his retirement in 1985. Blaise was well respected by both union and management.
He enjoyed staying active and was in the New Waterford Pensioners Club, and a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, Whitney Pier. He loved dancing and having a laugh and his quick wit was always cherished. He enjoyed anything mathematical and was often found with pen in hand writing a poem.
Kind and gentle, Blaise was a soul that touched you and left you a better person.
Loving husband to Germaine (Burns) Campbell; much loved Dad of daughters, SueAnne, Sydney, Claudette, Howie Center, Marilla (Vince) Sheppard, New Waterford, Joanie (Rickie) McCormick, Glace Bay, Cathy (Joe), Bateson, Wanda (Paul) Rawding, Upper Tantallon, Lynn, New Waterford; and son, Donnie, Glace Bay. Lovingly remembered by his stepchildren, sons, Jimmy (Cindy) Burns, Glace Bay, David (Linda) Burns, Edmonton, John (Cindy) Burns, Halifax, Darrell (Denise) Burns, Sydney, Robert (Darrell), Moncton, Michael (Melony) Manitoba, Leo (Krista) Burns, Glace Bay; daughters, Carol (Marvin),Wegner, Ont., Donna Burns, Sydney, Sheri (Girard) Breski, Glace Bay, Diane Grant, Sydney.
Cherished brother of sisters, Agnes MacKinnon, Antigonish, Theresa and Dorothy, Dartmouth, Evelyn, USA, Rita and Bernadette, Ontario; brothers, Michael (Marilyn), New Victoria, Russell (Jannett), Victoria Mines, Bernie and Fraser, Ontario, and Hilary, Howie Center.
He will be missed by 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, including Kail and Mia who were close to his heart; 19 step grandchildren, including two special grandsons, Jessie and Michael Grant and five step great-grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Blaise was predeceased by his first wife, Theresa, son, Harold William, brothers, Don and Aloysius, sisters, Susan and Alice and son Senley, all in infancy
Visitation will take place today Monday, May 4, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. A funeral mass to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, May 5 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Joseph’s Church New Victoria with Fr. Paul Mac Neil officiating. Interment will follow in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Victoria Mines. A luncheon will take place after in the Knights of Columbus Hall, 3226 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, all are welcome to attend.
