It is with sadness we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Russell Alphonsus Campbell of New Waterford (formerly Victoria Mines) on Thursday April 15, 2010 at home in New Waterford following a brief illness.
Born in Victoria Mines, he was the son of the late Russell H. and Susan (White) Campbell.
Russell served with the Canadian Navy in Sherwater N.S. for five years. Following that he was employed with the Department of National Defense at the Sydney Radar Base until his retirement. Russell was a member of the R.C.L., Br. 128, Whitney Pier.
Daddy loved sports, especially hockey and some of his best Saturday nights were spent after listing to fiddle music from Antigonish, watching the game with mom. Russell was an avid Maple Leafs Fan and was also known to enjoy a good cigar.
Russell was well informed and enjoyed discussing anything currently in the news. The radio was always on CBC news or classical music and the station was not to be changed. Russell loved history and especially war documentaries. Russell will always be remembered for his sense of humor. You had to listen carefully because it was very quiet and quick and you didn't ask him to repeat it. He was happiest working in his yard and garden in Victoria Mines.
Russell is survived by his wife, friend and companion of 55 years, Jeanette Campbell (McNeil); sons, Colin (Marilyn), South Bar, Dan (Willena), New Waterford; daughters, Teresa, New Waterford, Karen, Ontario and Nora in Edmonton.
Also surviving are grandchildren Jamie, Nicole, Erik and Rebecca Campbell, New Waterford and the delight of Da's day, great granddaughter, Olivia.
Russell is survived by brothers, Michael, Fraser, Bernie, Hilary and sisters Agnes, Theresa, Dorothy, Rita, Evelyn and Bernadette.
Russell was predeceased by brothers Blaise, Donnie and Aloysius and two sisters in infancy.
Visitation will take place, Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard Church, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford with Father Doug MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in St. Alphonsus Cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the Carmel Centre.
