It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wife, mother and grandmother, Marie Duguid, 80, on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, after a courageous battle with heart disease.
Marie was raised in New Waterford and was the daughter of the late Simon and Maime (Cathcart) Desveaux.
Marie was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard, New Waterford.
For many years, she lovingly took care of her husband and six children. Later in life, Marie became involved in the unions and enjoyed the many places the union business took her. Her last place of employment was as a PSW at the Maple Hill Manor, a job she loved and retired from.
Marie also enjoyed politics and devoted numerous hours in helping to elect "her party." Always outgoing, she has made many friends through playing cards, darts and bowling; all of which she had received numerous awards.
Leaving behind to mourn are her husband of 62 years, Jim and their six children, Jim 'Dugie' (Debbie), Greenwood, N.S., Alice (Bill), Fort St. James, B.C., Brian, at home, Moe (Shawna), New Waterford, Judy (Rick), Ottawa, Ont., Cathy (Paul), New Waterford. She also leaves behind a special niece, Betty MacNeil, Sydney, along with numerous nieces and nephews and many extended family that were very good to her over the years. Also left to mourn are her pride and joy, grandchildren, Pam and Wendy, Michelle and Cheryl, Bryan, Steven and Chris, John James, Katlyn and Kelly, Joanna and Megan. She will also be missed and is affectionately known as "Old Grandma" to the joy of her life, her great-grandchildren, Aiden and Cohen, Kevin and Mark, Taelor and Kaela, Max, and Taylor.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, Marie was predeceased by twin sons in infancy, brothers Patrick, Charles and Naish, sisters, Josephine 'Juppy' Bruce, Hester Aucoin, Kathleen 'Kay' Cormier Philpott.
Visitation will be held Monday April 26, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Marie will take place Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford. Burial with be in Mount Carmel Cemetery at a later date. All are invited to attend a reception in her honour to be held at the Carmel Centre directly following the funeral mass.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Diabetes Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or a charity of one's choice.
