It is with sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Neil Kevin Goodwin, 60, of Sharpes Lane, New Waterford, on April 25, 2010, at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a courageous battle with cancer. His loving wife, Shawna, was by his side.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Bill Goodwin and Jackie (Crowe) Anthony.
In earlier years, Neil worked at the Co-op grocery store before taking a job with the Nova Scotia Liquor Corp., where he was employed for 30 years.
Neil was a strong, community-minded person who enjoyed volunteering his time for others. He was a life member of the Kinsmen Club of Canada and was known to be a history buff who especially enjoyed reading about the Second World War.
Surviving are his wife, Shawna (Leadbeater); son, Jacob, 7, and daughter, Felicitas, 12; sisters, Laurie Anthony-Murphy (Bobby), Sydney, Annette Goodwin (Jackie), Montreal, Letitia Goodwin (Will), Halifax; brother, Billy Goodwin (Megan), Chapel Island; four nieces, Raven, Tallyn, Sibi and Thea Goodwin; three nephews, Jimmy Burns, Neil Crowe and Ander Goodwin; stepmother, Bridget Goodwin, Chapel Island.
Besides his parents, Neil was predeceased by a brother, Lauchie Crowe.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday), April 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Neil will take place Wednesday, April 28 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. A luncheon will be held at the Carmel Centre immediately following the funeral mass. Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or the Canadian Red Cross Equipment Rental Program.
