Carter Hickey, 63, of Prince George, B.C., and formerly of Official Row, Glace Bay, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late James and Grace (Coleman) Hickey.
Carter was a member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. He was employed at a young age with British Canadian Co- Op and later with the S&L Railway, both in Glace Bay. In 1969 Carter moved to B.C. where he was employed as a conductor with the British Columbia Railroad.
In his younger years he loved to fish and hunt. Carter was heavily involved with Little League Baseball in British Columbia. He did fundraising to support the baseball teams and was also an umpire. Carter volunteered his time at the pediatric ward, always trying to cheer the children and put a smile on their face. Carter always loved his hometown and never missed an opportunity to return.
Carter is survived by two brothers, John (Charlotte McRury), David, both in Glace Bay; two sisters, Phyllis (Wilfred) MacEachern, Marion Bridge, and Louise (George) Grosvenor, Dartmouth. Also left to mourn his death are nieces and nephews, Richard (Tara), Michelle, Krista Grosvener, Ryan (Tessa Johnston), Brennan (Jolene) MacLean and greatnephews, Coleman, Garrett, Ryan, Dylan, who had a special place in Carter's heart, Cody, Nicholas and extended family.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held Saturday, May, 8 at 10 a.m. in St. Anne's Church, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Rev. Leo Boone officiating. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the church foyer.
As an expression of sympathy for Carter, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, charity of one's choice or your local little league team.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
