Passed on: April 30th, 2010
After a long, full and enjoyable life, Joseph Richard Garabb, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on April 30, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Joe was born in North Sydney, May 22, 1918, and was the son of the late Catherine Garabb Robertson (nee Andrea) and Moses Garabb.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Marena (nee Libbus), sisters, Helen Joseph and Mary Mae Garabb.
He is survived by son, Roger (Sandie); daughters, Jo Ann (Hook) MacIsaac, Cathy (Bruce) Read, Janice (Joe) Waye; and was a proud Giddi to his 10 grandchildren, Wenda Lee, Joe, Natalie, Marena, Matthew, Michelle, Emily, Andrea, Joseph and Vanessa; and one great-grandson, Tyler; as well as his loving nieces and nephews.
Joe was a veteran of the Second World War, where he served overseas as a sergeant and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12.
He was a founding member and past president of the St. Joseph and Lebanese Benevolent Society, a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus, president of the Cape Breton Barbers' Association, a member also of the fishing and game association of Cape Breton and a devoted parishioner of St. Theresa parish.
Joe operated his own barbershop business for many years and was well known on Charlotte Street. In the early years, many a businessman would meet for their morning shaves and the latest news or one of Joe's famous jokes at Central Barber Shop. In his later years, he worked as a printer with Sydney Vocational School and also worked for his son, Roger at the Sportsmen's Club in Sydney.
As a young couple, Joe and Marena found the beauty of the Margaree River and continued throughout their married life to share it with family and friends. Joe was an avid salmon fisherman and hunter and nothing pleased "Moosehead" more than to start his day casting his line on one of the pools of the Margaree River.
Joe took pride every year when he received his annual Christmas cards from his old war buddies including the late Clarence Campbell, president of the NHL, and Turk Broda, former NHL player.
The family would like to thank the staff of 3A and 4B floors for their comfort and care during his short time spent at the hospital. A special thanks to Dr. Dale Miller with whom he had a very special friendship.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday, May 2, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa parish in Sydney at 10 a.m., Monday, May 3, 2010, with Rev. James Oliver officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
