We regret to announce the peaceful passing of Jean Purdie, 97, on Monday, May 3, 2010, at the Northside Community Guest Home, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines on May 27, 1912, Jean was the youngest daughter of the late John and Eliza (MacInnis) MacNeil.
While family members (all deceased) moved to the U.S., Jean remained in Sydney Mines raising her family and contributing to parish and community life.
Jean belonged to a number of organizations and committees. She was employed by the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company. She also worked at Woolco for several years; was past-president of St. John and St. Joseph Home and School Association; first vice-president of the Sydney Mines Senior Citizen and Pensioners' Club; past-president of the CWL and member for over 50 years; member of the Memory Lane Fun Band, and operated bed and breakfast for many years.
Jean is survived by her loving children, sons, Paul (Patricia) Baxendale, Bras d'Or, Kevin (Carol) Baxendale, Dartmouth, Gordon (Inge) Baxendale, Colorado, Joseph (Rose) Purdie, Dartmouth, and John (Sue) Purdie, Florence; and daughters, Arthena (Michael) Stubbert, Dartmouth, Catherine (Hugh) Kieley, Ohio; and her stepdaughter, Pauline (Shirl) Hillier, Boularderie. Jean will be greatly missed by her children and many grandchildren; she was also blessed with great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Arthur Baxendale and Joseph Purdie, her daughter, Jean (Garfield) Pero and four stepchildren, Cyril (Ella) Baxendale, Arnold (Helen) Baxendale, Ava (Bill) Cordy and Patricia (Paul) Baxendale.
Visitation for Jean Purdie will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass celebrating her life will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. The burial will be it the parish cemetery. A reception will follow the burial in the parish hall.
