It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Russell Ashford. He passed away Monday, May 3, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital following a brief battle with cancer.
Born in North Sydney, Dec. 22, 1928, he was a son of the late John Thomas and Annie (Best) Ashford.
Russell worked aboard vessels for most of his life, first with the Dominion Coal Company and later with CN Marine, retiring from Marine Atlantic. Russell was a member of the Orange Lodge for many years as well as St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys (Blagdon) Ashford; his children, Jack (Darlene) Ashford, Garland (Johanna) Ashford, Donnie (Donna) Ashford, all of North Sydney, Pauline (Richard) Carroll, Florence, Karen Clarke, Alberta; his grandchildren, Jason and Laura-Lee Ashford, Bert and Tanya Carroll, Crystal Clarke, Chasity and Amy Ashford; and by 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brothers, James and Claude Ashford.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, family and friends. Gone but not forgotten.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. John Kirkpatrick, Dr. Burns, Palliative Care staff, VON and the staff of 2nd floor Northside General Hospital for taking special care of our father.
Visitation for Russell will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Thursday, 3 p.m. from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Gloria McClure-Fraser officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery.
