Anne Burke, age 89 of Gillis Lane, Dominion, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at her residence with her loving family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Louisbourg, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Horatio and Annie Jane (MacIsaac) MacDonald.
Anne was a member of St. Anne's Church and a former resident of MacLean Street, Glace Bay. She loved doing crossword puzzles and going to Tim Horton's on McKeen Street in Glace Bay. Anne was always up for a good chat and cup of tea with her many friends. Bingo was also another of Anne's passionate hobbies. Unassuming in her nature, Anne was a very generous lady who loved her family. She was known to have a sharp sense of humor and really enjoyed socializing with people and making them laugh. Anne was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by three daughters, Dianne (Peter) O'Day, Dominion, with whom she resided, Eleanor (John) Hagar, Calgary, Barb (Robert) Stefanovich, Windsor, Ontario and two sons, Ronnie (Elizabeth 'Honey'), Whitney Pier, Joard (Cheryl), New Victoria.
Also surviving are grandchildren, Ashley O'Day, Dominion, John Ioannides, Victoria, B. C., Kaitlin & Nicholas Stefanovich, Windsor, Ontario, Lesley Ann & Garett Burke, Calgary, Joanne Mailman, Sydney, Bud Burke, Bermuda, Shawna Lawlor, Ontario, Leisje Carter, Calgary, Rhonda Burke, Calgary; great grandchildren and good family friend, Willena MacDonald.
Anne was predeceased by her husband, John Thomas Burke; three sons, Byron, Terry, Keith; two brothers, John, Billy and one sister, Jane.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Leo Boone is Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne's Church followed by a reception in the church foyer. Cremation to follow with interment at a later date in the parish cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Anne, donations in her memory may be made to Palliative Care, Cape Breton Chapter or a charity of one's choice.
