It is with heartfelt sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, Marie Bénac, age 88, a former resident of Howe Street, on Thursday, May 13, at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in North Sydney, Marie was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elsie (Vatcher) Murphy. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney and a member of the former Stella Maris Auxiliary. She was a member of the North Sydney Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club. A loving mother and grandmother, she was devoted to her family and in her younger years she especially enjoyed playing the piano with her husband George.
She is survived by her three daughters, Diane (Bill) Youden, North Sydney, Eileen (Reg) Cassidy, Hamilton, Michele (Bill) Nicholson, North Sydney; three sons, Paul Bénac, Shawn Bénac and Eugene (Karen) Bénac, all of North Sydney. She will be lovingly missed by her 11 grandchildren, Stefanie, Kyle and Ryan Nicholson, Chris Youden, Jennifer Drahusz and Reg Cassidy, Matthew and Josh Bénac, Quentin and Marriah Bénac, Jessica Renee and her great-grandchildren, Brandon Youden, Evan and Ryan Drahusz, Austin and Rylee Cassidy, Hayden, Jake and Evan Bénac. Also surviving are her brothers Archie Murphy (Mary Maxwell), North Sydney, William (Bud) Murphy, Port Aux Basques, sisters Elizabeth 'Betty' Ivey, Eileen Murphy, both of North Sydney and sister-in-law, Mary Murphy, North Sydney and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband George, her brothers Gerald Murphy, Jimmy Murphy and James in infancy and a sister Elizabeth in infancy, brothers-in-law Ralph Ivey, Albie MacKeigan and sister-in-law Lillian Murphy.
The family would like to thank the Northside Guest Home, Dr. Peter Poulos, Rev. Jake Andrea, Dr. John Chafe, Zohre Sarlak for the care and compassion shown to Marie and to the many family and friends who were always there for us.
Visitation for Marie will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass to be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of ones choice.
