BROOME, Daphne Undine "Momma Broome, Mrs. Broome"- 76, Truro, passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 21, 2010, at home. Born July 28, 1933, in Christ Church, Barbados, she was a daughter of the late St. Clair and Louise (Coward) Blades, and step-daughter of the late Belfield Niles. Daphne was a strong-willed lady who never backed down from attaining better for herself. Despite the many obstacles she faced as a young, black woman, Daphne achieved the position of Food Director at Colchester Regional Hospital. After leaving those jobs, she began her own catering business, Caribbean Caterers, which she operated for many years and catered for many area recreation clubs, key events and weddings. An independent, honest and hardworking lady, she maintained her own affairs and home, right up until the time of her passing. She took great pleasure in mowing her own lawn, as it gave her some exercise and also because she thought her son couldn't do it right! She always had an encouraging word, rooted for the underdog and loved her many friends as if they were her own children. Daphne is survived by her son, Mervyn, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Natasha, Toronto; Michael, Robert, Dartmouth; great grandchildren, Mykail, Tyesha, Dartmouth; Rosemarie, Toronto; step-sister, Letitia Nose, Toronto; several family members in Barbados and a wide circle of friends locally. Along with her parents and step-father, she was predeceased by her step-brother, Weldon Boutilier. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Daphne's family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, May 25, 2010, and where the funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 26, 2010, Pastor William Emberley officiating. Reception will follow. Interment will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, May 27, 2010, in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Family flowers only.
