It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother and friend, Phyllis Walters, on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Ball’s Creek, she was the only child of Daniel and Greta (Morrison) Jerritt.
Phyllis spent most of her life travelling with her family across Canada and much of Europe, during her husband Tom’s Air Force career. These journeys provided Phyllis and her family with many great opportunities to pursue their love of camping and the great outdoors. Her travels, her friendly smile, and her genuine interest in people enabled Phyllis to make many friends around the world.
Soon after Tom’s death in 1985, Phyllis returned to her roots in Cape Breton, to care for her aging parents. Following her parents’ deaths, she met a friend from her youth, Ron McDonald, and together they have rediscovered the beauty and music of Cape Breton, the Celtic Colours Festival being a highlight of each year.
Phyllis is survived by her two children, Tom Walters (Julie), Ottawa. and Charlotte ‘Charl’ Young (Bryce), Sidney, B.C.; her grandson, Brodie Young, Victoria, B.C.; her aunt, Pearl Layton, North Sydney; cousins, Danny Fraser, Westmount, Florence Chant, Sydney, Karen Burke, Truro; and her loving companion, Ron McDonald, North Sydney.
She was predeceased by her husband W.T. ‘Tom’ Walters.
Visitation for Phyllis will be Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will take place Tuesday, 2 p.m. from St. Giles Presbyterian Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Ritchie Robinson, officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery.
