It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leo John Kennedy, on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility.
Born in Port Morien, Feb. 28, 1921, he was the son of the late Michael and Clara (Phelan) Kennedy.
Leo was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church. He worked for the Co-op in New Waterford where he held the positions of assistant manager and manager. He was also supervisor and salesman with Maritime Life Assurance Company, Sydney, N.S.
Leo’s greatest joy was his family and he enjoyed varied sports activities in the New Waterford, Cape Breton area.
Leo is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Catherine (MacDonald); sons, Michael, River Ryan, John Hugh (Karen), L’Ardoise, Edward, River Ryan, Kevin (Jeannette), New Waterford; and daughter, Patricia (Fred) Cormier, Halifax; seven grandchildren, Michael Paul, Halifax, Stephen, Calgary, Jacquelyn, Halifax, Elizabeth, Shaun, Kathleen and John, New Waterford; sister, Elizabeth Cochrane, Deep River, Ont. and her children Clara and family, Father Joseph, Edmund and family, as well as nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Leo was predeceased by his two younger brothers, Edward and John.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
A funeral mass for Leo will be celebrated Tuesday, May 12 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Carmel Centre, New Waterford.
Donations in Leo’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
