Lorna Jean MacKenzie of Burtts Corner, NB passed away peacefully at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital on June 2, 2010, as a result of a lengthy illness. She was born in Minnesota on May 8, 1942 to Maritimers Dr. William H. and Carrie B. (Steeves) MacKenzie. The family soon moved back to Canada, settling in Saint John, NB. In 1960, Lorna graduated from Saint John High School then received a BA with honours in sociology from McGill. She then taught school for a year in Moncton, NB, and a year in Kitimat, BC. In 1978 she entered UNB Law School, graduating among the top scholars in 1981. Lorna worked for a time with a Fredericton law firm, Ryan, Graser, Smith, then found her true metier in drafting laws and regulations for the Office of the Attorney General, Government of New Brunswick. Lorna retired from Legislative Services in 2002. After retiring, Lorna turned her attention to local affairs, chairing the Local Service District for two terms. She was then appointed a member of the New Brunswick Rural Planning Commission. Her social skills and legally trained mind were of great value to both groups. Lorna also volunteered for the Keswick Valley Laubach Literacy Council, contributing particularly to crafts projects for children taking summer reading improvement classes at the Keswick Valley Memorial School. She was a fine painter, a gardener, a horseback rider, a lover of animals, a nature walker and a photographer. She sewed, knitted and smocked clothing, particularly for the little ones in her family. She will be greatly missed by many who knew her. Lorna is survived by her husband David Likely of Dorn Ridge, NB, and their children Angus Likely of Edmonton, AB, Anthony (Shandra) Prebble of Brantford, ON, Robin Prebble of Guelph, ON, Sibyl Likely of Toronto, ON, and Amy (David) Copeland of St. John's, NL. She is also survived by her sister Judith (Robert) Leon of London, England; brother, Roderick (Francoise) MacKenzie of Saint John, NB; nieces, nephews and several cousins. Anthony Prebble and Shandra Marr have two children, Mackenzie and Gillian, and Amy and David Copeland also have two children Liam and Evan. Her four grandchildren were greatly beloved by their Grandma Lorna.
A memorial service will be held at McAdam's Funeral Home in Fredericton, NB, on Monday June 7, 2010 at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association of Canada (www.phacanada.ca), the Scleroderma Society of Canada (www.scleroderma.ca) or a medical research charity of your choice. www.mcadamsfh.com
