It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, James F. MacDougall formerly of MacKay's Corner on June 7, 2010.
Born Sept. 25, 1930, in Glace Bay, he was a son of Susan (Gale) and Francis MacDougall of Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
He graduated from Saint Anne's School in 1949, and then graduated in 1952 from Saint Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing.
Jim was employed at Point Edward Hospital from 1952 until 1968 when he began with the Department of Community Services until 1989. Throughout this portion of his career he worked with vocational rehabilitation and with the mentally challenged.
Jim was intrinsic with the establishment of group homes and sheltered workshops for post mentally ill and mentally challenged clients. Jim was heavily involved with numerous community service groups (Glace Bay and Sydney Mental Health Association, Family Services of Cape Breton) and was deeply involved in his local church as first president of the parish council of Holy Family Church in MacKay's Corner and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
Jim is survived by wife, Loretta (Beaudry) MacDougall; three sons, Keith, B.C., Kevin (Claire) and their children, Ian and Lindsey of Calgary, Alta.; Terry (Heather) and their children, Adam and Andrew (Jenny); great-grandson, Gunnar of Lloydminster, Alta. and daughters, Sandra (Gerard Shaw) and their children, Tyler and Logan; and Debbie (Pat Acker) of Glace Bay; four brothers, Hector (Joan) Ont., Brian (Bill), Greg (Ruth) and Wayne of Glace Bay and his three sisters, Rita, Glace Bay, Cora Richards, B.C. and Margie (Rene Karrer), Ont. He is also survived by two stepsons, John MacLean (Jeannie) of Little Narrows and Lawrence MacLean (Nancy) and their children, Mathew and Colin of Sydney as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Jim was predeceased by his first wife, Sadie (MacKinnon), son, Joseph in infancy and his brother, Ken (Connie), Ontario, and many sisters-in-law and brothers in-law.
Jim's sense of humour left everyone with a smile on their face and his unending heartfelt kindness was enjoyed by everyone who had the good fortune to meet him. Jim was deeply respected by everyone that worked with him. To describe Jim in one word it would be "humble" and to describe his personality, "he loved life."
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place tomorrow (Thursday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Mass to be celebrated Friday, 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church at MacKay's Corner with Fr. Daniel Boudreau and Fr. Errol MacDonald concelebrating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or CNIB.
