It is with hearts full of sadness that we, the family of Michael McNeil, a resident of Maple Hill Manor and formerly of Duggan Ave., regret to announce his passing on Friday, June 11, 2010 at New Waterford Hospital.
Born in New Waterford he was a son of the late Michael C. and Sarah J. (Matthews) McNeil.
Michael was a member of the former St. Agnes church and currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. He began working in the coal mines at an early age and remained there for over 35 years. He was an avid bowler who took great pride in the sport, playing all over the island and winning several tournaments. Michael also enjoyed playing baseball, hockey, and going for long drives. He was known to be a generous man with a kind word for all. Michael was truly loved by all who knew him.
Surviving are two special grand-nieces, Laura and Judy McNeil of New Waterford; one special grand-nephew, James, Alberta; two very special great grand-nieces, Amanda and Kaley McNeil, New Waterford. Michael was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Neil, Pius, Alfred, George, and Charlie; sisters, Annie Bursey, Laura Pheifer, Sarah Elizabeth McNeil, and Ethel McNamara, and one very special nephew, James A. McNeil.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation will take place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Michael will be held Tuesday, June 15 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., with Father Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in St. Agnes cemetery.
