Earl Joseph O’Callaghan, 80, of Sydney, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Daniel and Blanche (Stone) O’Callaghan.
He was a member of St. Theresa’s parish, Sydney. He held the position of fire chief of Cape Breton Regional Municipality Fire Department. He was a member of the Firefighters Fraternal Association. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Club 55 Rhythm Band, Memory Lane and Legionnaire Singers and president of St. Theresa’s Food and Clothing Bank. Earl was an artist and musician. He loved camping and sitting around the campfire singing and picking his guitar or telling jokes.
Earl is survived by his wife, the former Shirley Campbell; three daughters, Cathy (Gary) Buckland, Coxheath, Tammy (Lorne) Currie, Valerie (Vince) Healey, both of Sydney; stepdaughter, Wendy (Laurie) Dutton, Ontario; stepsons, Glen Stevens, Sydney, Donald (Gord Gubitz), Halifax, Lorne (Michelle) Stevens; sisters, Rita (the late Robert) Sampson, Glace Bay, Mary (the late Ted) Bailey, Ontario, Anna Gillis, Coxheath; a brother, Emmitt (Sheila) O’Callaghan, Sydney; grandchildren, Mark (Alysha), T.J. O’Callaghan, Kerri O’Brien, step-grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler, Julian Dutton, Victoria and Olivia Stevens, Julian Currie and great-grandchildren, Taylor and Morgan.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Bishop, brothers, Bert, Roy, Stan, Sid and a sister, Cleo.
Visitation for Earl O’Callaghan will take place Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
