It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Yvonne Khattar, 87, of Sydney, at home in the presence of her family, on Saturday, May 16, 2009.
Born Aug. 14, 1921, in Causcapel, Que., Yvonne was the daughter of the late Victoria (Paul) and Peter Abud, originally of Tourza, Lebanon.
In September 1941 she moved to Sydney Mines as the bride of George John Khattar. They resided there for 10 years operating a retail furniture and grocery business together. They later moved to Howe Street in Sydney where she has lived for almost 60 years.
Family was always the central focus of Yvonne’s life. She opened her home for many family gatherings and remembered those times with great fondness. She also gave willingly of her time to the community in past years and served as a lifelong member and past president of St. Theresa’s parish CWL; member and past president of the St. Rita’s Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and as well as a long standing member and past president of the St. Joseph Lebanese & Syrian Benevolent Society. Always a lady, she was a person with high standards and excellent taste.
Yvonne is survived by her loving and devoted children, daughter, Katherine Karreman and son-in-law, Willem, Blackett’s Lake; son John, daughter-in-law, Irene and her precious granddaughters, Alanna and Monica; sister, Alice Naud, Montreal; brother, Leopold Abud, Lennoxville; in addition to several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, George (1988), her parents, sisters, Esperance, Valentine, Georgette, Sophie, Clarisse, Jeanne D’arc and brothers, Jean Marie and Antoine.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Tuesday, May 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass to honor Yvonne’s life will be celebrated by Fr. Paul Abbass at St. Joseph’s Church, Cabot Street, on Wednesday, May 20 at 10 a.m., followed by a reception in the church foyer.
Donations in Yvonne’s memory may be made to Hospice Palliative Care, the Renal Dialysis Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Health Care Complex or a charity of choice.
