Adrien J. Cormier, retired New Brunswick Chief Justice, Queens Bench, passed away on Monday July 5, 2010 from natural causes at the age of 93. Born on March 11, 1917 in Moncton, NB, he was the son of the late Robert and Onora (Breau) Cormier. Following three and a half years in the army during the Second World War, Adrien returned as Captain to establish his law practice in Moncton. In 1955, he was appointed County Court Judge for the counties of Westmorland Kent and Albert. In 1963, he was appointed to the Appeal Court of New Brunswick and became Chief Justice Queens Bench in 1964, retiring in 1982. Following retirement, he was appointed to the Federal Appeal Board and in 1983 was its Chairman until 1992. He was a member of the Deutsh Commission of 1962 which resulted in fundamental changes to the operation and structure of higher education in New Brunswick including the creation of Université de Moncton. His contribution to the Université de Moncton and the law profession was recognized in 1995 when the new Law Faculty at the UdeM was named in his honour. He was the recipient of three honorary degrees from Canadian universities. He was named Officer of the Order of Canada in 1995. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth (Day); three daughters: Mérielle Bernard (Louis), Isabelle Boudreau (Arthur) and Paulette; two sons: Pierre (Sandra Cassidy) and Louis Marcel (Marguerite); one sister, Bernice Hicks; four grandchildren: Marc, André, Michele and Joël; six great-grandchildren of special pleasure: Kaitlyn, Emily, Simone, Luc, Bianca and Maya. He was predeceased by his brothers: Raymond, Normand, Hervé and Alvin. The family will receive condolences at St. Pierre R.C. Church Cocagne on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pierre R.C. Church on Friday, July 9th, 2010 at 11 a.m. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
