It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Elizabeth Jean King, 80, a resident of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney formerly of Tobin Road, North Sydney, on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born March 1929, she was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Lila (Nicholson) King.
Elizabeth attended St. FX University, graduating in 1950 with a BA, where she received the Governor General’s Academic Medal, and then graduated from Dalhousie in 1951 with a B.Ed.
She taught school in several places throughout Canada, Trail, B.C., Manitoulin Island and Elliot Lake, Ont., Baddeck, Gannon Road School, North Sydney and Sydney Mines. She enjoyed nature, oil painting and writing, having a number of articles published in Canadian journals after graduating from university. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, North Sydney.
The oldest of seven children, she is survived by her son, David (Maureen) King; her four grandchildren, Cara Jones, Antigonish, Stephen King, Sydney, Anthony King, Halifax, and Angela King, Fort McMurray; one great-grandson, Cole Jones, Antigonish; her brothers, Tony (Muriel) King, Parksville, B.C., Robert (Olga) King, Bedford; sisters, Anne (Gene) Chaisson, Delaware, Cecile Kendrick (Pat), Port Credit, Trudy Furzecott (Bill), Barrie, Ont., and Voni King, Groves Point; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Elizabeth will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday (today) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass to be held 2 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
