Died as a result of a tragic car accident in Western Newfoundland on May 17, 2009, Dr. Ray Firme, age 84 years. Dr. Firme was a prominent Oncologist who practised at the General Hospital and helped establish the first cancer clinics. He was also a sports enthusiast and as provincial five-pin bowling president helped build a solid foundation for the sport. This included the establishment of the Peter Pan Lawn Bowling Club facilities in Bowring Park. He was also the first president, serving for several years of the Filipino Association of Nfld., an active member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Cabot and long time medical advisor to the Cancer Society. In recognition of his many years of service he was the recipient of the NL Medical Association Honorary Life Membership Award. Lovingly remembered by his wife and ballroom dancing partner of 56 years, Sophia, only child Ramon; brothers Constante and his wife Nena and Romeo and his wife Freding, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a wide circle of special friends. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may visit the family at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Friday, May 22 from 2-4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 2 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel.
