Barbara MacDougall

Born In: Canada

Passed in: Canada

THORBURN - Barbara H. "Bar" MacDougall, age 95, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2010 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Thorburn, she was a daughter of the late Finlay Duncan MacDonald and Margaret Plumb.
Except for a few years in Ontario, and last two years residing at Glen Haven Manor, Bar was a lifelong resident of Thorburn where she was Postmistress from 1959-1979, retiring after 20 years of loyal service to the community.
Throughout her long and eventful life, Bar had many interests; education, politics, family history, and of course sports. She loved to read, play cards and board games and a good "argument." However the priority throughout was her family. Although she set the bar high and challenged us to do our best, she was always there... not only to praise us when we succeeded, but also to comfort and support us with unconditional love when success was beyond our reach. In public she avoided the limelight but in our home she was the light and the rock we all leaned on.
Bar was a lifelong sports enthusiast. She was longtime member of the Thorburn Valettes Bowling team which won several league championships and competed regularly in the Provincial Ladies Bowling Tournament. In earlier times, a loyal Toronto Maple Leafs fan and later a diehard Blue Jay. She rarely missed a game on TV, during which she wasn't beyond questioning a bad call by the referee or umpire... to the point where we always said we were going to get her a "Striped Shirt and Whistle".
Bar was longtime member of the Thorburn Home and School Association, a member of the Thorburn Friendship Group, volunteer at the Valley View Villa and Boy Scouts of Canada "Cub Master" for many years.
As we go forward, Mom, Nannie, Gram may not be here but she will always be everywhere we look!
Bar is survived by her children: Johnnie, Thorburn; Bob, New Glasgow; Barbara Anne (Wayne Milligan), Minden, Ontario; Sam (Mildred), Scotsburn; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Gladys Morrison, Pictou.
She was predeceased by her husband, John (Duke); son, Donald; infant daughter, Margaret; grandson, Donnie; sisters: Margaret Isabel, Catherine and Marion; brothers: Herbert, Sandy, Ricker and Donald.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Union Presbyterian Church, Thorburn with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Burial will be in Thorburn Cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall.
Donations in memory of Bar may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or a charity of your choice.
