Scholtz, Elizabeth "Betty" -1941 - 2010, It is with heartfelt sorrow that our family announces the passing of a wife, mother, and grandmother Elizabeth "Betty" ( nee: MacPhail) Scholtz of Tillsonburg, at Tillsonburg Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 age 69 years with her family at her bedside. Beloved wife of 36 years to her loving husband Matthew Scholtz. Dear mother of Andrew (Erin) Scholtz and their daughter Rosalea of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; Stephen Scholtz of Toronto. Betty is also survived by her sister-in-law Gail Lightfoot of Kentville, Nova Scotia, and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Donald and Nellie MacPhail, and her brothers Arthur and Harold Lightfoot. Besides her family, music and theatre were passions of her life. She studied piano and vocal in her hometown of Kentville, as well as Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. She was involved in musical theatre in Nova Scotia; favourite roles: Maria in "The Sound of Music", and Luisa in "The Fantastiks" (which she was able to see one last time in Simcoe last month). Betty studied nursing at Dalhousie, and returned to earn a degree in nursing education, and went on to teach nursing in Yarmouth, N.S., and Orillia, Ont. Betty graduated from Salvation Army Training College in 1973, and was appointed to Tillsonburg. She and Matthew Scholtz were married in April, 1974. Betty was chosen Tillsonburg Citizen of the Year in 1993. She directed numerous Rotary musicals, the last being one of her favourites, "The Sound of Music" in 1994. She taught voice and Suzuki piano privately. She was often a guest soloist, especially at her home church Tillsonburg First Baptist Church. In 1978, she formed the Rainbow Chorus, (which evolved into the award-winning Tillsonburg Youth chorus) in order to give children in the community the opportunity to sing. Their annual Christmas and spring concerts were always well attended. The choir won numerous awards at the Woodstock Rotary Music festival and other choral and singing competitions. Their last concert was in 2002. In 1997, they made a recording of some of their favourite songs. More than 500 copies were sold. That same year the choir went on its first tour, traveling to Cleveland, and performing for varied audiences in the area. The following year the choir joined the Niagara Regional Police Male Chorus for a joint concert in Niagara Falls. She loved to sing with the Woodstock Fanshawe Singers for the last 8 years. Betty loved reading mysteries and Christian fiction, as well as attending theatre and concerts with her husband and friends. But, most of all, she loved to hold Rosalea, her new grand-daughter. A Memorial Service will be held at Tillsonburg First Baptist Church in Betty's memory on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 11 a.m. Pastor Donna Chapman officiating. Cremation has taken place. At the family's request memorial donations in Betty's memory (payable by cheque) can be made to the Woodstock Fanshawe Singers, Box 1573, Woodstock, Ontario N4S0A7 for the establishment of the Betty Scholtz music scholarship. The recent announcement of this scholarship meant a lot to Betty. It filled her heart with joy to know that she would be able to help someone financially to pursue the music studies that she was unable to afford as a young person. Ostrander's Funeral Home 43 Bidwell St. Tillsonburg (519) 842-5221 entrusted with Betty's funeral arrangements. Personal condolences may be made at www.ostrandersfuneralhome.com
