Simon was a teacher and coach his entire life. Most recently, he was the recipient of the Frank Baldwin Award from Basketball Nova Scotia for his life-long contribution to the sport as a player, coach, referee and clinician. Some of his accomplishments include being an inductee to N.S. Heritage Sports Hall of Fame in 1980 and Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 as a member of Central High School basketball team, Canadian amateur champs, 1963; member of Xavier Junior College basketball team N.S., Intermediate champs, 1965; member of Acadia Axemen basketball team, 1966-67; member of New Waterford Strands men's Basketball team, Maritime Senior Basketball champs, 1971. To help develop the sport in Cape Breton, Simon organized the first ever basketball camp in Cape Breton in 1972 and began Cape Breton's first mini basketball program at around the same time. In 2000 he was honored as division chair of the 19th Coal Bowl basketball tournament. From 2003-05 he coached the Baddeck Broncos Division 4 girls to two consecutive provincial titles and runners-up in 2005.
Son of the late Leo and Anne Chiasson, New Waterford. Simon is survived by his wife Joan (Bardswich), Big Harbour; sons, David, Dartmouth, Jonathan and wife Norah, granddaughters, Madelyn and Jane, Lunenburg; sisters, Leona (Charles) MacAulay, Eastern Passage, Wilfredene (Matt) Hawley, Mary Ann (Glen) MacKenzie, New Waterford.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Melvin (Noella Chiasson), New Waterford.
A service for the celebration of Simon's life will be held at Greenwood United Church, Baddeck, 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 21, 2010. Reception to follow at the Masonic Hall.
