It is with sadness that we announce the death of Raymond Gillis, at the family home in Glace Bay, on July 18, 2010, at age 67 years.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John Francis and Ida (Gallant) Gillis.
He lived most of his life in Glace Bay having worked as an electrician at Devco for several years, then at the heavy water plants in Glace Bay and Port Hawkesbury.
When he was younger, Raymond enjoyed playing a tune or two on his accordion while spending time with family and friends. Raymond was also a devoted caregiver to his mother, Ida in the later stages of her life. He cared for her in the family home until she was admitted to hospital. He would have been 68 years old in August.
He is survived by his son, Richard (Yarrow), Tantallon, N.S., and two granddaughters, Maia and Alexandra. He is also survived by his brother, Aubrey Gillis, Reserve; and sisters, Agnes Gillis and Lynn Grenier (Michel), both of St. Peter's, Elaine Tighe (Tony), New Waterford, and Genevieve Boudreau (Henry), Janvrin's Island/Arichat.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Earle, Adrian (Dothan, Alabama) and sister, Anne Burns (Toronto).
Cremation has taken place and by request there will be no visitation. A small graveside service for family and friends will take place on Friday, July 23, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the IWK Health Centre in Halifax in Raymond's memory.
Arrangements have been entrusted to V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
