It is with sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Alexander Joseph Walker, 72, of Gardiner Mines. Alex passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late James and Elizabeth (O’Brien) Walker. Alex was a member of St. James Church, Gardiner Mines. He was a member of the armed forces and was overseas in Germany. He was a commissionaire and was employed at Sydney Airport. He enjoyed playing the guitar and the banjo. He and his wife, Dorothy enjoyed bluegrass and went to a lot of festivals. Alex was an avid dart player and was in the Gardiner Mines league.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Dorothy (Peori); daughter, Dianne (Alan), Edmonton, Alta.; sons, Tony (Cheryl), Niagara Falls, Ont., Tom (Terry), Edmonton, Alta.; six cherished grandchildren, Logan, Mason, Elijah, Naomi, Isaac and Larhya.
Dorothy and Alex would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August of this year. He will be sadly missed and never forgotten.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Richard and Greg.
In honouring Alex’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Church, Gardiner Mines, with Fr. Gerald Campbell officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
